Today I’m turning a deliciously classic layer cake into “to-die-for” German Chocolate Cake Bars!

And this type of pure sweet overload is a good thing! Well, at least in my book.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love making cakes and especially eating cakes.

But, but if I can turn an all-time favorite cake into a decadent bar, well, I’m all in!

You start with a dense chocolate cake base, topped with sweet milk chocolate chips, then finished with a truly decadent pecan-coconut topping.

This rich and gooey, heavenly concoction will have you smacking your lips for more!

German Chocolate Cake Bars

Ingredients
Crust:
1- 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
3/4 cup (12 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa

Topping:
1- 1/2 cups milk chocolate chips
3 large eggs
3/4 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
3 cups pecans, lightly toasted and coarsely chopped
1 cup sweetened flaked coconut

Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare your 9×13-inch baking pan by lining it with aluminum foil, leaving an overhang of about 2-inches. Spray with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.

To your food processor, add the flour, confectioners’ sugar, and cocoa and pulse a few times to combine. Then add the cold butter, and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press the mixture into bottom of your prepared pan.

Bake the crust for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the warm crust, and as the chips melt, spread to an even layer with an offset spatula. Then cool on a wire rack for about 30 minutes.

Once the crust is cool, make the topping. First add the eggs into a large mixing bowl, and beat lightly with a whisk. Add the brown sugar, corn syrup, and melted butter. Whisk together until fully incorporated and smooth. Add the coconut and pecans and stir well. Then pour evenly over the melted chocolate chips and crust.

Bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until edges are light golden brown and topping has set. Remove from oven and cook completely on a wire rack. Then, put in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to get firm. Using foil overhang, lift bars from pan and place on a cutting board. Gently remove the foil and using a sharp knife, cut into squares.
