Get ready for a sweet weekend with a handful or two of these scrumptious Butterfinger Muddy Buddies! It’s hard to believe I had never heard of Muddy Buddies until recently. Many people say that this sweet treat was one of their childhood favorites…I wish it had been one of mine! Seems like I missed out on this one! But I think I may just catch up for lost time as I have found this sweet concoction not only easy to prepare, it’s also quite delectable and you can change up the ingredients to your personal likings! So, since I love Butterfinger candy bars, I could not resist making this version — crunchy rice chex cereal surrounded by sweet chocolate, butterscotch, sugar and Butterfinger candy bits! All I can say is WOW!
Butterfinger Muddy Buddies
(inspired from Crumbs and Chaos)
5 cups Rice Chex Cereal
2 (6 count) packages of Mini Butterfinger Candy Bars
1/2 cup Butter
1 bag (12 oz.) Milk Chocolate Chips
1/2 cup Butterscotch Chips
2 cups Confectioners’ Sugar
Begin by preparing two baking sheets by lining with waxed or parchment paper and set aside until ready to use. Then put cereal in a large bowl.
Unwrap 1 package of the candy bars and cut each one into 4 pieces and set aside. Unwrap the other package of candy bars and finely chop and put into a small bowl and set aside.
Add the butter and both types of chips into a microwave safe bowl, and heat for about 30 seconds. Stir and heat for another 30 seconds; stir again. If it’s not entirely melted and smooth, heat for another 30 seconds. Please do not over heat, as you want to make sure your mixture is smooth.
Pour mixture over cereal and mix well to coat.
Put 1 cup of confectioners’ sugar and half of the chopped candy bar into a gallon size baggie. Spoon in half of the coated cereal mixture into the baggie and shake to coat. Spread onto baking sheet and repeat process with remaining sugar, candy and cereal.
Let set for about 15 minutes before breaking into pieces. Then add the larger pieces of chopped Butterfingers into the mix. I like to store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for a cool snack.
These Butterfinger Muddy Buddies were quickly gobbled up at my home in no time! Again, is this recipe super easy and the best thing about it is that you can use any combination of flavors and for any season! This is a great snack or fun treat to bring to a party! Hopefully I’ll be whipping up a new version soon!! Enjoy!
Growing up, we called this puppy chow, and it was a favorite at bake sales! I’ve never had it with butterfingers – it looks amazing!
Thanks! Never heard of puppy chow either! It’s a must try with the butterfingers!
